Grammar and High School

I am a writer and fortunately, I have never struggled much in this field. I was always a top scorer in language papers and my essays were the best. Yet, I have seen some of my fellow classmates struggle to speak English or write a letter. I don't know whether this was the effect of disinterest in the subject or lack of knowledge, but I firmly believe that ignorance about grammar also has its part to play.

So for this post, I decided to express my views on the importance of grammar in the high school curriculum and why I feel that this is a subject that should be a mandate in every school system in the world.

Grammar is a subject involving rules of syntax, pronunciation, and structure of language. By teaching students to abide by regulations during their speech, it helps students learn to inherently discipline themselves. Grammar also helps improve student’s oral, verbal, written and aural skills. It will help students feel good about their selves and will open students to a world of wonderful knowledge and enlightenment.

Several of the high school students plan on continuing their education and attending esteemed universities, which expect students to be fluent in English. Students are tested on various aspects to examine their language skills and one needs grammar to ensure success in these examinations. Education is the foundation of a person and many higher education institutions demand a basic knowledge of grammar as a pre-requisite to their courses. By learning grammar at the school level, students will be well-prepared for their college education.

English is the language of today and the future. It is the most widely spoken language all over the world and the most important medium of communication on not just global levels but also local levels. For any person to truly succeed in today’s world English is a necessity and to learn English, grammar is the foundation. Without grammar, one cannot excel in English and without English, it is nearly impossible to achieve success on professional fronts. The corporate world, where most students will enter after their education requires these grammar skills to help save not just time and money but also their impression and at times even their job.

Grammar eases communication and enables a coherent flow of information from the speaker to the listener. It helps avoid needless ambiguity and confusion. Communication has the power to open hidden avenues and grammar is the most powerful tool that we can give to students to make the best of their skills.
