An Analysis: Can't We Be Smart and Look Good, Too? By Rachel Toor

In my last post, I posted an article that I had come across. In this post, I want to share with all of you my opinion about this article. I have also included a more theoretical aspect in terms of Bloomberg's taxonomy and Gardner's multiple intelligence theory to emphasize the literary value of this article. The article, “Can't We Be Smart and Look Good, Too?” by Rachel Toor is an analysis of peoples’ opinions about the importance of appearance in academia. Toor talks about her friend Lynn, who is a dean by profession yet is very particular when it comes to her outfits, makeup, shoes and hair. She carries herself with elegance and poise. Lynn is up to date with the latest fashion products and can differentiate amidst hundreds of lipsticks of the exact same shade. She works out regularly at the gym but never messes up her appearance and is very proud of how she carries herself. However, her attention to such detail is often mistaken for frivolity and people in her pro...

An Article Suggestion: Can't we Be Smart and Look Good, Too? By Rachel Toor

I like reading articles about different subjects occasionally and I came across a really nice article and I thought I would share it with all of you. This article is in now way any kind of work of mine. I do not intend to infringe any copyrights. I just thought that content was really nice and wanted to share it with all of you. I will be talking about my views about this article in another blog post but for now here is the article: Can't We Be Smart and Look Good, Too? My friend Lynn is a girlie-girl of the highest order. She wears shiny, pointy shoes, never has a hair out of place, and can appear glamorous in jeans and a T-shirt. She shops frequently, with glee and determination. Whenever we go to Nordstrom, she buys another tube of lipstick in what seems to me exactly the same shade as the seven others she totes around in her Coach bag. She puts a zillion products on her face, but never looks like one of those women who use too much makeup. Her clothes are hip and t...

COVID 19 - Infected Many or Affected More?

The COVID-19 virus has been one of the greatest terrors humanity has faced in a long while. It has got everyone frightened including me. The rate at which it is spreading is very alarming and the media doesn't do a very good job of shielding our fears either. Everything that I have been hearing about Italy, Iran, Spain and other countries is terrifying and I hope that all the precautionary measures that our nation is taking will prevent us from reaching that stage. I have been keeping myself updated with the news regularly and the cases are increasing day by day. The virus has infected many but has affected several more. The closures of schools, libraries, colleges, suggestive curfews are all very limiting. I understand their necessity but it prevents us from engaging in  a number of regular activities. The quarantine and spread of this virus have restricted us from enjoying the sunny weather and spending time with our friends and family. I am certainly enjoying the online clas...

Music, Mood, Memory and the Mind

Music means a lot to me and today I felt that I should share why I think music is important in everyone's life. Here's presenting a research essay on the effect of music on mood, memory and the mind.  Music, Mood, Memory and the Mind Music is a very important part of human life. Philosophers may define music in the sound of a baby’s cry or the shrill sound of a woodpecker, yet that does not limit this exceptional form of art. The definition of music is subject to different interpretations. The common man associates music with entertainment whereas scientists associate music with phenomena. These phenomena rang from the Mozart Effect, which emphasizes how listening to Mozart’s music before performing a task can enhance problem-solving abilities, to ‘Musical Skin Orgasms’ which involves the occurrence of horripilation on hearing certain kinds of music. These varied understandings of such a fine form of art bring up the conclusion that the effect of music is as limited ...

An Opinion

Many of us are in one of the best years of our life—teenage—sporty, bubbling and full of life. And incidentally this is also one of the most crucial years of our life—a time for developing our own identity and dispositions. Yet one thing that is common in all the teenagers is the desire to belong to peer groups, the desire to be included in the popular groups of school, college, classes, or anywhere else, the burning desire to simply not reveal or revel in our own individualitie I am very sure that if we go around asking teenagers like us what their views are on fitting in with the crowd. Many will reply that they want to fit in, be like the popular kids, or go with the flow. If you ask people why they hang out where they do, common responses are that friends hang out there, or that it is a popular place. Why do people wear what they wear? Typical replies are that the clothes are in style, or that the popular kids wear them. In fact, I feel this want for blending in does no go aw...

Jacques Derrida Talks about Love

Image
I have talked about Bollywood and cliches in some of my previous posts, yet I have not talked much about love. Valentines' Day is right around the corner and love is in the air!  I recently came across a video where a man talks about his ideologies about love. I agree with some part and disagree with others. Yet, I though I would share my opinions about his video and perspective on this topic Here is the video if you would like to watch it: Love is an inanimate and abstract concept and has been a topic of interest and conflict for philosophers around the world for centuries. The reasons for such discrepancies and difficulties are quite obvious. There is neither any one way to describe love nor is there any one aspect to address. Love is a very vast idea that involves depth, analysis and perspective. Throughout the video, Derrida finds it difficult to talk about love in an indiscriminate manner. He believes that he is not “capable of talking in generalities about lo...
